Class in a Glass.
Wine Label Competition
Jill Campbell Mackay.
Wine and Art are perfect partners, they both take raw materials and turn them into something three dimensional, so the wine bottle becomes yet another canvas.Chateau Mouton Rothschild understood this, and over the past 65 years ago the house of Rothschild has created a veritable who’s who of famous artists all having created unique wine labels for this world renowned winery.
Included in the Rothschild label line up have been Picasso, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon, sculptor Henry Moore, Miro, Chagall and Andy Warhol, and recently a label was used credited to a water colour painted by Prince Charles.
Nowadays the art of the label is considered to be an important marketing tool, with the imagery on the label utilising the power of suggestion, immediately implying to any potential purchaser the flavour, quality, passion and elegance of the wine contained inside the bottle.
All this to be conveyed in about three square inches of label.
Labels have previously been used where the image has first been stitched on leather and then scanned by computer; one winery in America commissioned a lady to embroider an image, and then printed this to great affect, as the stitches of the finished embroidery piece suggested the different stages the wine had gone through to get into the bottle. Cartoon characters, dogs cats, Bacchus, the sun, moon, and stars, have all been used to great effect on wine labels.
The Cyprus Mail and Tsangarides winery now call upon all painters, illustrators, photographers, graphic artists, typographers, printmakers, plus arts and crafts exponents, to submit their own concept of ‘label art’ for two special wines created by the
Tsangarides winery.
George Kassianos the Cyprus Mail wine writer and President of the Cyprus Sommelier Association has taste tested each of the wines, and the following descriptions is the brief that will help the creative process to then marry the verbal descriptions into what we hope will be two visually attractive wine labels.
Remember, the final images must help give clues to buyers as to the type of wine they are buying.
The wines are:- Chardonnay 2008.
This Chardonnay has not been matured in oak barrels so the fruit of the Chardonnay is left clear crisp and still possessed of a vibrant silky texture that will caress the tongue. The colour is light straw and offers an aroma of citrus blossom, and fruits such as apricot, pear, lemon, and lime. There’s also a slight tropical touch of pineapple, mango, melon, and guava.
Best served with roast chicken, chicken, satay, grilled seafood, sushi, spicy Cajun, or Asian, also works well with any butter based sauces.
Rose Shiraz - This is a fresh uncomplicated wine with a light to medium body. The colour is translucent strawberry, with flashes of pale violet. There’s a mix or aromas, with strawberry, spice, cherry, and slight touches of green apple, Quince, and Kir Royale. The taste on the palate is zesty with the juicy combined aromas of fruit, rich warm berry flavours, and touches of red currant and raspberry.
Best served with chicken, most Asian dishes, Chinese meat dishes and barbeque food.
The submitted art work has to be able to be reduced down to 3 square inches and still be effective as a label.
We suggest the original art be no more than A4 size.
You may submit as many designs as you wish.
There is no age restriction.
All art must be original and not copied from any other existing wine label. (we can easily check this)
The original art can be created from any material or process.
The winners and runner ups will have their art exhibited in the Tsangarides winery.
The winners will have the final images published in seven magazine.
2 Cases of each of the wines will be given to the winners.
Both sets of art works will also be purchased by the winery.
The labels will be on the bottles and selling all over the island by November 2008.
